Here’s another post with articles I’m reading this week. An article from Seth Godin, reducing malpractice payouts with apologies, doing Facebook well in local government, and whatever else ends up in here.

Occasionally, I’m going to write a post here about the things I’m reading this week, if anything just to have a personal catalogue of what I’m reading. So, without further ado, here’s This Week in My Brain, featuring: Karl Marx, Daniel Pink, failure and character, kitchen scales, towns built around boulders, and a profile of the creator of one of my favorite TV shows.
If you’re like me, you wish The Little Prince was more than a minor influence in your life. It has such a powerful and simple message, but one which challenges the everyday “grownup” world. On this Sunday morning, I spent some time rediscovering The Little Prince by making a paper doll. I also rediscovered things about myself along the way.
Here’s another edition of What I Learned! Today we have some sales-related learnings courtesy of training. The team I joined about a month ago had gone through a two-day sales training session. Well, the trainer returned yesterday and we had a three-hour sales training, which another new team member and I joined. Our trainer, Linc, was a very interesting guy, and aggressive about getting us to change. It really pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it was for the best. Here are a few takeaways.
I am officially done with my intern year! Can you believe it? It seems like I just started the program a few weeks ago. Now I am settling in to my new job and applying all that I learned since July 2010 (and before, of course). Today I wanted to share four pieces of advice I picked up over the past year and intend to share with others for years to come. I’ll also tell you more about the Management Intern lunch traditions.
Draw an “E” on your forehead. Seriously, before you read this post, draw an “E” on your forehead. Ok, you may proceed.
I hope to make this a regular place for me to post a few quick thoughts about what I learned over the past week. These will sometimes be work-related, and sometimes they will be related to my hobbies or outside activities. Last week, I learned a lot about joining a new team and jumping into projects. I started my new position with Community and Economic Development about two weeks ago, so I am still relatively new.
Tonight, in addition to making my whole wheat pita bread and “chili and pearl barley,” I made a quick quinoa and broccoli thing with peas. I’m not sure what to call it, but it was quick, easy, healthy and delicious. My favorite combination!
Recently, I went back to being vegan. Well, it’s complicated, I guess. I explain more here.
A few Fridays ago was Debbie’s last day before retirement from the city of Phoenix. It was also the end of my second week of my first full-time job at the City of Phoenix. And then Sunday night I went to dinner with Nan, who left Phoenix for a Department Chair position at a university in Salt Lake City. If that week was any more stuffed with change, my pockets would be rattling.
