Fun Blik Wall Decals

February 7, 2010

At the risk of making my landlords nervous (if they ever read this blog), I LOVE our new wall decals from Blik. We have two sets, this bamboo one and this plant one. Kara and I put up the bamboo one about a week and a half ago, and there’s an image of that one at the end of this post.

Birds in my bedroom

Before I ordered these, I bought a similar (but much lower quality) wall decal from Target.  That one had a big sheet with a tree and some birds and then a whole bunch of little birds.  All you do with the Target one is apply the sticker to your wall.  But then, in any space where there is not a decal, you have a clear (but visible) plastic film.  That one is in my bedroom.  It looks OK, but definitely not great.

But I liked it enough that I thought, let’s get more.  So I ordered those two I mentioned from Blik.  After waiting an unimaginably long week to get them, they arrived.  And I was instantly confused.

See, these decals come on sheets too.  However, there is a four step process for applying them to the wall, and you’re only applying the vinyl decal, not the clear plastic film.  Which is great if we ordered two that were large blocks of decal.   The bamboo one was not hard.  But the plant/weeds one was very, very difficult.  Let me explain the process, with real-life illustrations.

Step 1: Rub the decal onto the clear film. This requires a surprising amount of work, and you rub it while it is upside down on the floor or a table using a tool they provide that is like a thicker, larger credit card. Incidentally, you can use a credit card too, they say. The decals come on large sheets, so for this one I had to cut out each individual stalk so that I could place them individually.
Step 2: Peel the decal off the white backing into the clear plastic. This process, and Step 4, are the hardest. The decal wants to stick to whichever side you are not currently trying to peel it away from, obviously, so you have to sorta trick it into it. And what’s worse is, each of the little tiny petals on the decals are, yes, separate, and do not like to cooperate. It’s surprisingly difficult to get this right. Charlie is amazing at it, and so luckily he did most of the peeling.
Step 3: Place the decal. Now you just place the decal on the wall, and smooth it out using that same tool. Not too difficult, but you have to press hard and make sure it is stuck to the wall well, otherwise the peeling is even more difficult.
Step 4: Peel the clear plastic off the wall. …hopefully, leaving the decal behind. This takes some finesse, that’s for sure. Charlie, again, was excellent at this part. Me, not so much. And, TADA! It’s done!

So, instructions aside, here is the final result:
